Legal // New York tint law, plainly

What's the legal tint limit in New York?

New York VTL §375(12-a) sets the limit: the windshield and front side windows must let at least 70% of light through on every vehicle. On passenger cars, the rear side windows must also meet 70%, but the rear window can be darker if the car has outside rear-view mirrors on both sides. On SUVs, vans, and pickups, the rear side and rear glass can be any darkness. The windshield permits a non-reflective strip on the top six inches only. Target 70%; a small enforcement tolerance exists but isn't guaranteed.

Most shades drivers actually want are darker than 70% — which is not street-legal here. A darker install can draw a ticket and will fail New York's annual inspection, and that risk is yours to assume. We'll measure your glass, tell you exactly where each shade lands against the law, and document the film we install. If you need darker glass legally, New York grants medical exemptions through DMV Form MV-80W — signed by a physician or optometrist, with a Commissioner-issued sticker for each exempt window.

FAQ // Ceramic tint

What's the legal tint limit in New York? +

The windshield and front side windows must let at least 70% of light through — so treat 70% as the target (the DMV states it as a flat limit; a small enforcement tolerance exists but isn't guaranteed). On passenger cars the rear side windows must also meet 70%, though the rear window can be darker with dual outside mirrors; on SUVs, vans, and pickups the rear side and rear glass can be any darkness. The windshield allows only a non-reflective strip on the top six inches.

Will your tint pass inspection? +

Only 70% VLT film passes on the front side windows. Anything darker will not pass New York's annual inspection and can draw a ticket — if you choose a darker shade, you're knowingly assuming that risk. We measure your glass and tell you exactly where each option lands before we start; if a shop won't put the number in writing, that tells you something.

What's different about ceramic film? +

How long until I can roll the windows down? +

When installed by us, you can roll windows down immediately, no wait is required.

Will it bubble or turn purple? +

Not this film. Purpling and bubbling are dye-film failures. Ceramic film carries a lifetime warranty against both — registered to you at install.

Is there a medical exemption for darker tint? +

Can you tint the windshield? +

New York State allows for a non-reflective strip on top six inches. Full windshield is not legal in NYS if it exceeds 70% VLT. We will can install as low as 20% in cases of Law Enforcement, Show-Cars, or other cases as long as you are aware of the risks associated with windshield tints. Clear Ceramic Film such as XR or XR+ is strongly recommended for heat rejection, glare reduction, interior protection and skin protection

Yes. We strongly recommend scheduling a consultation to be able to provide as accurate of a quote as possible.
